R.I.P. Jesusmobile

After 16 glorious years on the road, the Jesusmobile has now gone to Car Heaven.

Many of you may recall that I sold the only car I had ever owned to a fellow parishioner last Fall. I would check in with Jen every couple of months or so to make sure that the car (and by extension...Jen) were ok…especially once it started snowing!

Then, Krissy gave me a call last week saying that had seen the Jesusmobile at a local repair shop. She couldn’t surmise from her quick glance just what the total damage might be.
Well…I found out last night when I saw Jen at Mass. With the music ministry rehearsing “Light the Fire Again” in the background, I approached her and she confirmed that she had gotten into an accident. Thankfully, she escaped unscathed. The Jesusmobile, not so lucky. I guess the plethora of bumper stickers couldn’t save Jen from sliding into a concrete barrier.

Turns out the total cost to repair the evangelization machine would be over $2,000. Considering that this is considerably more than the price she paid for it, her decision to keep it off the road made sense. In a twist of irony, her new car is also a 1990 white Acura Integra, sans the stickers.

I thanked Jen for the update, reiterated my relief that she was ok, and then fell into Gail’s arms in a moment of reflection and sadness. I turned to Rich to share with him the news, and his look said something to the effect of “I’m surprised it lasted this long!!!”

As I left the church after Mass, I said a silent prayer of thanksgiving. I take solace knowing that the Jesusmobile has joined my Dad’s golden Honda Civic and my Mom’s blue GTO in a place where there are no more speed limits, street signs, or accidents.
